Bariatric Surgery: What to Expect During the Recovery Process

Recovery from laparoscopic bariatric surgery is faster than most people expect, but it follows an order. This is the usual timeline.

In the hospital

You will be walking a few hours after surgery: it is the best protection against blood clots. Pain is controlled with medication, and you start with sips of water and clear liquids. Most sleeve patients stay one night.

Week 1

  • Clear liquids, then full liquids. Hydration is the main goal.
  • Short, frequent walks.
  • Some tiredness and discomfort at the incisions are normal.
  • No lifting over 10 to 15 pounds.

Weeks 2 to 4

  • Purées and then soft foods, with protein at every meal.
  • Many people return to desk work during the second week.
  • Vitamins start as your team indicates.

Weeks 4 to 6

  • Solid foods return in small portions.
  • With your surgeon's clearance, exercise becomes more intense.

Months 2 to 12

Weight loss is fastest during the first six months and slows afterwards. Follow-up visits check your weight curve, your lab work and your supplements. Some temporary hair thinning around the third or fourth month is common and recovers with adequate protein.

What speeds recovery

  • Walking every day from day one
  • Meeting your fluid and protein goals
  • Sleeping enough
  • Following the diet stages without skipping ahead

Call your team if you have

  • Fever, chills or a racing heart
  • Abdominal pain that gets worse
  • Vomiting that does not stop
  • Shortness of breath, chest pain or a swollen leg
  • Redness or drainage at an incision

This page offers general information and does not replace a medical visit. Every case is assessed individually; results and recovery times vary from person to person.
