BMI calculator: are you a candidate for bariatric surgery?
Body mass index is the first number a bariatric surgeon looks at. Calculate yours in a few seconds; it does not replace an evaluation, but it tells you where you stand.

Calculate your body mass index
Body mass index relates your weight to your height. It is the first number a surgeon looks at.

BMI is a reference. It does not tell muscle from fat and does not replace a medical evaluation. The calculator does not store or send your data.
What your number means
BMI is your weight in kilograms divided by your height in meters squared. International guidelines use it as the first criterion for bariatric surgery:
- BMI of 40 or more: a candidate, even without other conditions
- BMI of 35 to 39.9: a candidate, especially with diabetes, hypertension or sleep apnea
- BMI of 30 to 34.9: possibly, with type 2 diabetes or another condition that is hard to control
- BMI under 30: other options are usually recommended
What BMI does not tell you
It does not tell muscle from fat, or where the fat is stored. It does not know your story either: how long you have been trying, which conditions you have or what medication you take. The number opens the conversation; the decision is made at your evaluation.
