Frequently asked questions
Straight answers to what people ask most before deciding on bariatric surgery in Tijuana.
Before surgery
Who is a good candidate for bariatric surgery?
In general, adults with a BMI of 40 or higher, or 35 or higher with conditions related to obesity such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure or sleep apnea. Some people with a BMI between 30 and 35 are also candidates. It is confirmed at your evaluation.
Is it safe to have surgery in Tijuana?
Safety depends on who operates and where. Here you know both surgeons by name, with their training and licenses, and surgery takes place in a hospital with intensive care, laboratory and imaging on site.
How long do I need to stay?
Patients traveling from the US usually plan four days: arrival, pre-op tests, surgery with a hospital night, and discharge after the surgeon's review.
What pre-operative tests are required?
Lab work, an electrocardiogram and an evaluation by an internal medicine physician. Depending on your case, an endoscopy, a sleep study or a psychological evaluation may be added.
How should I prepare?
You will follow a liquid, low-calorie diet before surgery, stop certain medications as instructed, quit smoking and arrange help at home for the first days.
Can I have bariatric surgery if I have had other abdominal surgeries?
Usually yes. It depends on the type and extent of the previous operations, which is why the surgeon reviews your history first.
The procedures
How much weight can I expect to lose?
It depends on the procedure and on you. Most patients lose a large share of their excess weight during the first year to year and a half. Your surgeon will give you a realistic estimate.
Is the weight loss permanent?
It can be long-lasting when you follow the nutrition plan, stay active and keep your follow-up visits. Surgery is a tool, not a guarantee.
What are the risks?
As with any operation: bleeding, infection and anesthesia-related complications, plus risks specific to bariatric surgery such as leaks or blood clots. They are uncommon, and they are explained to you in detail before you decide.
Sleeve or bypass?
The sleeve is simpler and does not change absorption. The bypass is often preferred with type 2 diabetes or severe reflux. The choice is made with your history in hand.
Recovery
How long will I be in the hospital?
One night for a sleeve in most cases; one to two for a bypass. The surgeon decides your discharge after reviewing you.
When can I go back to work?
Most people return to desk work in one to two weeks. Physically demanding jobs need longer.
Will I have a lot of pain?
Some discomfort is normal in the first days and is managed with medication. Laparoscopic surgery is considerably more comfortable than open surgery.
When can I exercise?
Walking starts the same day. More intense exercise waits four to six weeks, once your surgeon clears you.
Cost and travel
What does the package include?
For US patients: ground transportation from and to San Diego airport, hotel, hospital, surgeon and team fees, pre-op tests, nutrition guidance, post-op medication and follow-up. Airfare is not included.
How much does it cost?
It depends on the procedure and your BMI. You receive a detailed quote in writing before you commit to anything. The clinic's published prices in Mexican pesos are on the packages page.
Is bariatric surgery covered by insurance?
Some US plans cover it, usually after a long approval process. Many patients choose Tijuana because they are not covered or do not want to wait. Ask us for the documents you may need for reimbursement.
Are there hidden costs?
No. The written quote lists everything that is included and anything that is not, such as airfare.
Do I need a passport?
Yes, a passport or passport card to re-enter the United States. Our driver takes you across the border in both directions.
Can someone come with me?
Yes, and we recommend it. Ask about the companion's stay when you book.
