Mini gastric bypass in Tijuana: one connection, less time in surgery

Also called one-anastomosis gastric bypass, it combines a long, narrow stomach pouch with a single connection to the intestine. It is a shorter operation than the classic bypass with a similar goal.

What it is

Mini Gastric Bypass

The surgeon shapes the stomach into a long tube and joins it to a loop of small intestine about two meters downstream. With only one connection instead of two, operating time is usually shorter. Food bypasses part of the intestine, which reduces absorption and changes hunger and blood-sugar hormones.

Like the classic bypass, it requires lifelong supplements. It is not the first choice for people with significant acid or bile reflux, which is why the evaluation includes a careful review of your symptoms.

When it is usually considered

  • High BMI where a stronger metabolic effect is wanted
  • Type 2 diabetes associated with obesity
  • Revision after a sleeve with weight regain
  • No significant reflux symptoms
  • Commitment to supplements and follow-up

The indication is confirmed at your evaluation.

Step by step

Your mini bypass, step by step

Evaluation

History, lab work, internal medicine assessment and a review of reflux symptoms; endoscopy when indicated.

Pre-op diet

Liquid, low-calorie diet in the days before surgery.

Surgery

Laparoscopic one-anastomosis bypass under general anesthesia.

Recovery

Hospital stay, early walking, staged diet and a supplement plan.

FAQ

What people ask most

How is it different from a regular bypass?

The classic Roux-en-Y bypass has two connections; the mini bypass has one. The operation is usually shorter. Each has advantages, and the choice depends on your case.

Is it really 'mini'?

The name refers to the technique, not to the commitment. It is a full bariatric operation and requires the same preparation and follow-up.

Can a sleeve be converted to a mini bypass?

In selected cases, yes. It is one of the revision options when weight comes back after a sleeve.
