Common Myths and Misconceptions About Bariatric Surgery

Few operations are surrounded by as many opinions as bariatric surgery. These are the myths we hear most, and what is actually true.

“It is the easy way out”

Surgery changes the size of the stomach and the hormones of hunger. It does not choose your food or take your walks. Patients work every day to keep their results. It is a tool that makes the effort effective, not a way to avoid it.

“It is more dangerous than staying obese”

In experienced hands and in a proper hospital, laparoscopic bariatric surgery has a risk profile comparable to other common operations such as gallbladder removal. Severe obesity, left untreated, carries its own risks: diabetes, hypertension, sleep apnea and heart disease.

“You will gain it all back”

Some regain is common after the second year, and a minority of patients regain a significant amount. Most keep off a large part of the weight they lost when they keep their habits and their follow-up.

“It is only cosmetic”

Bariatric surgery is metabolic surgery. Its main purpose is to treat disease: it often improves type 2 diabetes, blood pressure, sleep apnea and joint pain.

“You will never eat normally again”

You will eat smaller portions, more slowly and with protein first. After the first weeks most foods return. What changes is the quantity and the relationship with food.

“You cannot get pregnant afterwards”

Fertility often improves with weight loss. The recommendation is to wait 12 to 18 months after surgery before a pregnancy, so that weight is stable and nutrition is adequate.

“Surgery abroad cannot be safe”

Safety depends on the surgeon, the hospital and the follow-up, not on the country. Ask for names, licenses and the hospital's facilities, wherever you have surgery.
