Psychological Effects of Bariatric Surgery: What to Know

Bariatric surgery changes the body quickly. The mind follows at its own pace. Knowing what is normal makes the first year easier.

What usually improves

Many patients describe more energy, more confidence and less anxiety about health. Everyday things, such as tying shoes, fitting in an airplane seat or playing with children, stop being obstacles, and that affects mood.

What can be hard

  • Food is no longer a refuge. If eating was a way to handle stress or sadness, that outlet is suddenly smaller. The feelings remain and need another route.
  • The mirror lags behind. It is common to keep seeing your previous body for months, or to feel like a stranger in the new one.
  • Relationships shift. Partners, family and friends react in different ways to your change, not always supportively.
  • Expectations. Surgery solves obesity. It does not solve everything that was attributed to it.
  • Loose skin and plateaus can be discouraging after the first rapid months.

Signs that call for support

  • Persistent sadness or loss of interest
  • Loss of control over eating, grazing or eating in secret
  • Replacing food with alcohol, shopping or another compulsive habit
  • Constant fear of regaining weight

None of these mean the surgery failed. They mean it is time to talk to someone.

What helps

  • Psychological guidance before and after surgery
  • Keeping your nutrition follow-up visits
  • Physical activity, which is also treatment for mood
  • A support group or people who have been through the same process
  • Patience: the adjustment takes about as long as the weight loss
